“Achieving Sustainable Energy Targets in the ECOWAS”
Achieving the ECOWAS regions vision for a prosperous regional energy market is contingent upon harnessing the region’s vast renewable energy potential.
In 2013, landmark regional sustainable energy policies were adopted to address the major energy challenges faced by the region. These polices aim to increase the share of renewable energy in the region’s overall electricity mix to 10% in 2020 and 19% in 2030 to implement energy efficiency measures that free up to 2,000 MW in the long term.
These regional policies on renewable energy and energy efficiency have enabled the ECOWAS Member States to define a common vision for increased use of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, small-scale hydro and biomass for electricity generation and other energy services. In this framework significant progress has been made towards achieving these ambitious targets.
However major investment is required alongside adequate regulatory frameworks that build investors’ confidence. More importantly, this vision relies on an increased participation of the private sector.
ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Forum (ESEF)
The ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Forum (ESEF) was instituted in 2017 by the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) to bolster efforts of member states, along with local, regional and international initiatives to achieve greater generation of electricity from renewables.
ESEF aims to facilitate investment in the regional energy sector. It promotes cooperation and partnerships to accelerate uptake of a viable market for sustainable energy solutions in the ECOWAS.
The forum is also a platform for improving the policy and regulatory landscape for private sector investment through engagement between ECOWAS policy makers, regional and international private sector players and financial institutions.
The 2nd Edition of the ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Forum (ESEF2018) will take place from 13 -15 November 2018 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Dakar, Senegal.
What to expect
ESEF 2018, will foster concrete progress in the implementation of the ECOWAS region’s ambitious sustainable energy targets by bringing together major actors from within and outside the region and will demonstrate the region as the frontier for a sustainable energy market.
It will be an action-packed, demand-driven and result-oriented event, where participants take a detailed look at the challenges facing the sector, how they are being overcome and where the opportunities lie for speeding up the implementation of game-changing projects.
- Showcase investment opportunities in sustainable energy sector in the 15 member-states.
- Enhance regional cooperation and trans-border power trade from renewable sources.
- Highlight technological progress in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors.
- Demonstrate regional Energy Efficiency potential.
ESEF2018 will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders within and outside the region: high-level representatives from government including ministers and directors of energy, regional and international development partners, regional and international private sector players, financial institutions, academia and research and civil society representatives.
Venue & Date
The event will be held from 13 – 15 November 2018 at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Dakar, Senegal.
The agenda features a series of panel discussions, presentations and practical working sessions on renewable energy and energy efficiency as well as related sectors. All sessions will be translated in English, French and Portuguese.
This year, ESEF will put on a show with a 300 m2 exhibition room for organizations looking to showcase their products and services in order to raise the visibility of their brand. The exhibition is open to all actors across the sustainable energy value chain (manufacturers, EPC contractors, financing institutions, distributors, suppliers, etc.).
